Our History

Arlington Assembly of God Church was born in the month of July 1955.  Its arrival was an answer to the prayers of several families who had been earnestly praying for the establishment of a full gospel church in the Arlington section of Jacksonville.  The first services of the newly organized congregation were held at the Arlington Women’s Club.

After just a few weeks however, the small congregation of about a dozen individuals, located a wood frame house at 88 Arlington Road.  With the help of a loan from the Peninsular Florida Assemblies of God District Office, the house and the property were purchased.  However, before it could be used for church services, the house had to be renovated. While the renovation work was being done, a tent was erected on the new church property and services were held under the tent.

During those early days of the church, finances were very tight.  Founding pastor, Rev. L.J . Oliver, worked a full-time job at a dry cleaners in addition to pastoring the church.  The congregation certainly did its part as well.  Through their hard work, dedication, and sacrificial giving, the church was soon firmly planted and after just two years the congregation was able to pay off their property loan.

The first ten years of Arlington Assembly’s existence were characterized by slow but steady growth; however, the church went through cycles of tremendous growth during 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.  These periods of growth necessitated the building of three new auditoriums.  But the progress of Arlington Assembly can be measured by more than the constructing of new buildings.  Throughout its life, God has used Arlington Assembly as an instrument of salvation, healing, and encouragement for thousands of individuals.  Today, more than fifty years later Arlington Assembly lives on as a vibrant community of believers dedicated to ministering the message and the love of Christ to all we are privileged to come into contact with.

We at Arlington Assembly are grateful for those who prayed for and established Arlington Assembly of God. We are also appreciative of all those who have sacrificially led and labored on behalf of this great congregation throughout its history.  But most of all, we are grateful to God for His faithfulness. Through every victory, every set back, every success, and every hard place, He has shown Himself faithful. Truly we say, “To God Be The Glory” for all He has done and is continuing to do at 88 Arlington Road in Jacksonville, Florida.

Teach me, O Lord, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end.
